DuoTurbo: Implementation of a Counter-Rotating Hydroturbine for Energy Recovery in Drinking Water Networks

To enhance the sustainability of water supply systems, development new technologies for micro scale hydropower remains an active field research. The present paper deals with implementation a micro-hydroelectric system drinking facilities, targeting gross capacity between 5 kW and 25 kW. A counter-rotating microturbine forms core element energy recovery system. modular in-line technology is supposed to require low capital expenditure, profitability within 10 years. One stage DuoTurbo composed two axial runners, each one featured wet permanent magnet rim generator independent speed regulation. This compact mechanical design facilitates integration into existing installations. first product prototype developed by means Computational Fluid Dynamics based hydraulic along laboratory tests assess efficiency characteristics. agreements simulated measured characteristics absolute errors widely below 5% validate approach large extent. provides maximum electrical power 6.5 at head 75 m, reaching hydroelectric peak 59%.
